2. Hawk Hill

Hawk Hill beckons nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts with stunning vistas and abundant wildlife. Hawk Hill provides sweeping views of the city skyline, the Golden Gate Strait, the famous Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean. But it's not just the scenery that captivates visitors; Hawk Hill is also renowned as a prime spot for birdwatching, particularly during the fall raptor migration season when thousands of birds of prey soar overhead. I personally recommend visiting for sunrise...this is the perfect spot to watch the city wake up, listen to early morning coyote howls and enjoy a serene escape from city life. 3. Golden Gate Overlook

Located in the Presidio of San Francisco and world renowned for spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge (as well as the Pacific coast), Golden Gate Overlook is one of the most famous bridge viewpoints. This overlook offers an unparalleled vantage point to marvel at one of the world's most iconic landmarks, and not only do you get direct straight-on views of the bridge, but it is picturesquely flanked by two towering cypress trees. As the morning fog rolls in or as the sun sets over the Pacific, casting a warm glow over the bridge, this scene becomes truly magical. Visitors are treated to awe-inspiring views of ships passing below the most famous bridge in the world as it stretches across the entrance to the San Francisco Bay. Spring is a special time to see the wildflowers blooming here too.

Photo Tip: Have the photographer stand 15-20 yards back and zoom in (x3 on an iPhone), which will make Golden Gate Bridge appear much larger behind you.

Sutro Bath Ruins in San Francisco

4. Sutro Baths

Situated along the rugged coastline of San Francisco, the Sutro Bath Ruins stand as a testament to the city's rich history and natural beauty. Built in the late 19th century by entrepreneur and former mayor Adolph Sutro, the baths once boasted the world's largest indoor swimming complex, drawing crowds with its extravagant attractions. Tragically fire destroyed the complex in the 1960s and it was never rebuilt, but the ruins remain here as a captivating landmark. Today, this site serves as a glimpse into the city’s past, with the ruins juxtaposed against the stunning backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and the nearby Lands End cliffs. A visit to the Sutro Baths promises an immersive experience highlighting San Francisco's past and a stunning spot for nature enthusiast to enjoy breathtaking coastal sunset views.

Originally constructed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, this architectural marvel was designed by Bernard Maybeck to evoke the grandeur of ancient Roman ruins. Despite being intended as a temporary structure, its breathtaking beauty captivated visitors, leading to its preservation and eventual reconstruction. Today, the Palace of Fine Arts serves as a cultural hub and picturesque oasis in the heart of this bustling city, surrounded by lush gardens, tranquil lagoons, and soaring colonnades. This spot is a photographer’s dream filled with rich history, architectural splendor and serene water reflections. 6. Marshall’s Beach

Marshall’s Beach offers visitors a picturesque retreat from the city's urban hustle, especially during sunset. Tucked beneath the towering cliffs of the Presidio, this hidden gem boasts stunning panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean. Located just north of the popular (and clothing optional) Baker Beach, Marshall’s Beach can be accessed from the Batteries to Bluffs Trailhead. The hike rewards adventurers with its pristine sands, dramatic rock formations, and tranquil coves. As one of the city's lesser-known beaches, it offers a serene escape from the crowds, perfect for sunbathing, beachcombing, or simply admiring the natural beauty of the coastline. Whether you're seeking solitude, breathtaking Golden Gate Bridge views, or a unique beach experience, a visit to Marshall’s Beach promises an unforgettable coastal adventure in the heart of San Francisco.

Bay Bridge seen from Harrison & Spear in San Francisco

7. Harrison & Spear

The Golden Gate Bridge gets the majority of attention, but don’t forget about the Bay Bridge! One of my favorite spots to view this magnificent structure is along Harrison Street. The intersection of Harrison and Spear offers a great scene with the towering Bay Bridge perfectly framed by the Embarcadero’s historic buildings. Then head down towards the water’s edge over to Rincon Park to see this towering feat of engineering extend across the San Francisco Bay in all its splendor.

8. Lombard Street

Lombard Street, famously known as the "Crookedest Street in the World," is an iconic landmark nestled in the heart of San Francisco. This winding thoroughfare features eight hairpin turns along a steep, flower-lined descent. Originally designed to reduce the street's steep gradient and make it safer for vehicles, Lombard Street has become a beloved tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the globe. Fun fact: the street's sharp turns and picturesque surroundings have made it a popular filming location for movies and TV shows, such as Marvel’s Ant-man and the Wasp. From the top of Lombard Street, visitors are treated to stunning views of the city skyline, including Coit Tower and the Bay Bridge in the distance. Whether you're looking to snap a memorable photo, experience a thrill ride down its winding curves, or simply soak in the charm of San Francisco's iconic streets, a visit to Lombard Street promises a unique and unforgettable experience.

Bonus Photo: After enjoying the curvy Lombard views, take a gander down Hyde Street for incredible views of Alcatraz Island.

Situated amidst the scenic surroundings of Lincoln Park in San Francisco, California, the Legion of Honor stands as a majestic monument to art and culture. Originally built to commemorate the fallen soldiers of World War I, this neoclassical masterpiece houses an impressive collection of European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts spanning over 4,000 years of history. Highlights here include a replica of the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris, France, complete with its own version of the iconic "Thinker" statue by Auguste Rodin. Beyond its rich artistic offerings, the museum's stunning architecture and breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean make it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and sightseers alike. A visit to the Legion of Honor promises an enriching and unforgettable experience, whether you're drawn to the world-class exhibitions, seeking a tranquil escape in the picturesque surroundings, or simply looking to immerse yourself in the beauty of San Francisco's cultural heritage.

San Francisco’s “California Henge” covered by Karl the fog

10. California & Gough

There are so many wonderful spots to enjoy the rolling streets of San Francisco, but one of the most magical views happens twice a year perched atop the intersection of California and Gough. Looking east from this viewpoint for a few days in September and April, the rising sun perfectly aligns between the buildings above the tip of the Bay Bridge in the distance, known as “California Henge” or “San Francisco Henge”. Just beware that the bay area fog, aka Karl, may thwart your experience, like it did in the photo above. If your visit to the city doesn’t fall on these dates, don’t fret...it’s still a wonderful spot to photo the sunrise and early morning city bustle.

Know Before You Go

• Please remember all the Leave No Trace Principles on your visit. Some of these views are found on sensitive habitats, so make sure to stay on the maintained trails...shortcuts cause erosion and climbing on coastal bluffs could result in loose, crumbling rocks with dangerous falls.

• San Francisco and the surrounding communities have sadly succumbed to terrible crime over recent years. Car break-ins are now widespread and frequent, so please don’t leave anything of value in your vehicle, even if it’s not in plain sight.

• Some of the spots listed above are located along busy intersections. Please be cautious and always be aware of your surroundings when photographing, being respectful of local residents and traffic.
