Park & Itinerary Overview
Whether you’re a desert enthusiast, a first-time visitor, or just passing through Tucson, Saguaro National Park offers a beautiful landscape full of wonder and exploration. In fact, my first visit to Saguaro was on a trip across Southern Arizona, which included stops at Bisbee, Tombstone, and Chiricahua National Monument. I only had one day in Tucson to see this park for myself, so this 1-day packed itinerary mirrors much of that first adventure I had in this park.
Divided into the Tucson Mountain District (West Side) and the Rincon Mountain District (East Side), which are on the opposite sides of Tucson, this park is home to the iconic saguaro cactus and breathtaking Sonoran Desert views. Today’s guide is designed to help you maximize your time and experience the best of both park districts in one day. With stunning sunrise views, ancient petroglyphs, scenic drives, and serene hiking trails, you’ll leave with lasting memories of this unique desert wonderland! So let’s dive into the perfect one-day itinerary!
Morning: Saguaro West (TMD)
Stop 1: Sunrise at Desert Discovery Trail
Begin your day with the magic of sunrise at the Desert Discovery Trail. This short and easy 0.4 mile-loop immerses you in the heart of towering saguaro cacti bathed in golden morning light. Interpretive signs along the trail provide fascinating insights into the desert ecosystem, and viewing benches make it a peaceful and informative way to start your day.
👉 Tip: Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise to capture the pre-dawn pink skies over the desert landscape.

2. Hike to Valley View Overlook
Drive 2 miles to the Valley View trailhead along the Bajada Loop’s Hohokam Road. just under a mile round trip, this short and slightly uphill hike leads to the Valley View Overlook. This is one of the best panoramic views on the west side of the park. Here, you’ll see a sea of saguaros below stretching as far as the eye can see.
👉 Tip: There’s a lovely bench at the viewpoint, so pack a mid-morning snack to enjoy at the overlook while taking in the sweeping desert vistas.

3. Signal Hill Petroglyphs
Next, drive 2 more miles to Signal Hill and marvel at the ancient petroglyphs etched into boulders by the Hohokam people over 800 years ago. The short 0.4 mile out & back trail to the top of Signal Hill rewards you with stunning views and a glimpse into the park’s cultural history.
👉 Tip: Morning light is perfect for photographing these ancient carvings.

4. Bajada Loop Drive
Cap off your morning by completing the scenic 6 mile Bajada Loop Drive. Combining Hohokam Road and Golden Gate Road, Bajada Loop Drive offers scenic views passing through the western edge of Saguaro National Park. This unpaved but well-maintained dirt road, winds through dense saguaro forests and offers several pullouts for short hikes, picnic areas, and photo opportunities, including the previously mentioned Valley View Overlook and Signal Hill.
👉 Tip: Stop at the Sus and the Ez-Kim-In-Zin Picnic Areas to see the beautiful structures constructed by the CCC nearly a century ago.

5. Red Hills Visitor Center & Lunch
Stop by the Red Hills Visitor Center for a picnic lunch and learn more about the park through wonderful interactive exhibits and ranger programs. The shaded picnic areas make it an ideal spot to recharge before heading to the east side of the park.
👉 Tip: Bring your water bottles with you to the Visitor Center. This is one of only two spots in the park that has a bottle filling station.
Afternoon: Saguaro East (RMD)
6. Rincon Visitor Center
Drive 30 miles through Tucson (about 1 hour drive time) to the east side of the park. If you skip Red Hills Visitor Center on the west side of the park, begin your afternoon at the Rincon Visitor Center, where you can grab maps, refill your water bottles, and get tips from the rangers.
👉 Tip: Watch the 15 minute “Voices of the Desert” video, which explores the Native American viewpoint of the Sonoran Desert.
7. Drive the Scenic Cactus Forest Drive
Cactus Forest Drive is an 8-mile loop that showcases the Saguaro East’s diverse landscapes, including dense saguaro forests and open desert plains. Along the drive, you’ll find several stops worth exploring.

10. Sunset at Javelina Rocks
Finish off your epic 1-day adventure exploring the Javelina Rocks, my personal favorite sunset spot in Saguaro National Park! Named after the javelinas that enjoy taking shelter under the boulders here, these rock formations are truly unique and a joy to explore. The cholla cactus here glow when backlit by the setting sun, similar to Joshua Tree’s Cholla Cactus Garden.
👉 Tip: Javelina Rocks is also a great spot for stargazing if you plan to linger after sunset.
Know Before You Go
• Saguaro National Park is open 365 days per year. You can walk or bike into the park 24 hours a day. However, both the Bajada Loop Drive (West) and Cactus Forest Drive (East) are closed from dusk until dawn to vehicles, with hours varying throughout the year. If you find yourself inside Cactus Forest Drive after nightfall, the gate will automatically open for you as you exit. The Bajada Loop Drive gates are not automatic, and park rangers will sweep the area, encouraging visitors to exit after sunset.
• Please remember all the Leave No Trace Principles on your visit and be aware all resources (living and non-living) are protected in the National Park. Picking up/taking any resource is prohibited.
• There are no concession stands, snack/soda machines, or restaurants in either section park. Water fountains are found at both visitor centers and only there.
• There is little to no cell reception throughout the entire national park, so make sure to have reliable GPS when exploring Saguaro National Park.
• Remain on trails at all times. No off-trail use is permitted in areas below 4,500ft elevation.
• Pets must be on a leash, not more than 6 feet long at all times. Pets are not allowed on trails, except for the Desert Ecology Trail and the paved section of Mica View Trail (between Mica View Picnic Area and the Broadway Trailhead). Pets may be walked along the roads & are allowed in the picnic grounds. Dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities are allowed to go with their owner.
• Summers in Saguaro can be very hot. Plan on hiking early in the morning when it’s cooler, and make sure to be back to the trailhead by 10 AM. If it’s forecasted for temperatures to be over 110°F, abort your hiking plans for the day. Hiking when it’s hot can be dangerous and even deadly.
• Prior to your visit, make sure to check the official NPS website for the most up-to-date information on road and trail conditions.
