Perfect Day at Bass Lake - Adventure, Fun & Food!

Location
Just a short 10 minute drive from Oakhurst, CA, east of Highway 41, the picturesque Bass Lake is about four miles long and sits at an elevation of 3,400 feet, making it the perfect spot for Summer fun. It’s surrounded by the Sierra National Forest along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, giving you those stunning, tree-lined views in every direction. Bass Lake is known for its warm waters, which are perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing. And with its proximity to Yosemite, it’s a great extension of your adventures in the park.

History
Before we start our adventure today, let’s get you up to speed on the rich history of Bass Lake. Up until the early 1900s, there was no lake here (to most people’s surprise), but rather a lush meadow with Willow Creek flowing through it. Long before this area became the picturesque retreat we know today, it was home to the Chukchansi Indians. The Chukchansi, whose rich legacy continues to thrive in California, were the first known inhabitants of this lush area, and they resided here for thousands of years. About 200 years ago, the Mono Indians made this valley their seasonal home, drawn by the abundant wildlife and the flowing waters of Willow Creek. For generations, they fished, hunted, and thrived in this serene landscape until 1851, when the waves of change brought by the California Gold Rush disrupted their lives. The arrival of the Mariposa Battalion marked the end of an era for the Mono, who were forced to leave their cherished valley as the rush for gold swept through the region, forever altering the course of history for the native peoples who once called these lands home.
What we know as Bass Lake today was actually formed in stages from 1901 to 1910 when the San Joaquin Electric Company built the Crane Valley Reservoir to generate hydroelectric power for the San Joaquin Valley. The name “Bass Lake” didn’t arrive until several years later when sadly a lumber company polluted the lake, killing all of the fish. After being ordered to replace the fish by the government, they re-stocked the lake with a non-native bass species, which are still present today!

Today, we’re taking out one of Miller’s Landing’s 18 foot Patio Boats (aka pontoon boats), which is perfect for a laid-back cruise around the lake. They also offer 20’, 24’ and 25’ versions depending on your party size, and each one features a gas bbq, comfortable seating, and a canopy that shades half the vessel. You can even rent an inner tube to pull behind for some extra fun on the water! If you’re not a seasoned boat captain, have no fear! The friendly staff takes each potential driver through a safety training prior to shoving off, ensuring that everyone that sits behind the wheel is ready and comfortable.

Wildlife
While you’re out on the lake, keep your eyes peeled for all the incredible wildlife found here, including bald eagles! Bass Lake is a haven for these majestic birds, and currently there are 3 different spots along the shore where they’ve built nests. Seeing a bald eagle soaring above the lake is an awe-inspiring experience and a reminder of the incredible wildlife that calls this area home. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars or telephoto lens for a closer look! Pro tip for spotting bald eagles in the trees—look for golf balls! Their white heads pop out like little golf balls in a see of evergreen.
Around the lake you’ll also find osprey, ducks, mule deer, and even black bear...so keep an eye on the lake shores and tree tops for the beautiful wildlife that resides here, especially at dawn and dusk when they’re most active.

Afternoon Hike
Way of the Mono Trail
After having our fun on the water, we’re heading up to hike the Way of the Mono Trail. This trail offers panoramic views of Bass Lake, and trust me, the sight of the lake from above is something you don’t want to miss. The loop trail is short and sweet at well under a mile, making it perfect for all ages. Interpretive panels are found along the way, providing wonderful insights into the area’s flora and fauna, as well as the Mono indigenous people who resided in this region.
The trail rises about 150 feet in elevation across a few wooded switch backs...and about half-way along the loop, you’re faced with an incredible panoramic vista point of Bass Lake. Here you can walk out on a large granite shelf with clear views of the lake and the sprawling Sierra National Forest. This is also where you’ll see evidence of the Native Americans that called this place home. Look closely at the granite and you’ll notice round depressions in the rock. These granite bowls, called mortars, were used by the Mono people to grind acorns and other nuts & seeds into meal.

If you’re in the mood for more hiking, there are plenty of other trails in the area as well, which offer varying levels of difficulty and equally stunning views.
For those seeking a hike that promises both a challenge and a breathtaking reward, the Willow Creek Trail at Bass Lake is an absolute must. This 2.7-mile trek is not for the faint of heart. The trail offers a moderately steep hike, with rugged terrain that will test your endurance, but every step is worth it. Along the way, you’ll be treated to the stunning sights of two waterfalls, Angel Falls and Devils Slide. As you navigate the path, you’ll feel the power of nature all around you, from the rushing waters of Willow Creek to the towering trees that shade your journey. It’s a hike that demands effort but rewards you with some of the most unforgettable views this area has to offer.
