The Best Laid Plans

As the saying goes the best laid plans often go awry.

Last Monday seemed like the perfect day to drive up into Sequoia National Forest. I checked the road conditions and current weather...looked great. My husband and I loaded up the car, and, in under three hours, we reached the forest entrance. The sun was bright, the weather was warm.

I had planned the perfect day. Then, out of nowhere, ten minutes into the park...BAM "road closed" signs straight ahead! A strong winter storm was expected to roll in the following evening bringing over 5 inches of snow and they were closing things up in anticipation.

Our regular road through the park and down to Lake Isabella was out of the question...so we decided to try a new path. We made our way across the park on a one lane unpaved "road"-I use the term road loosely. As we finally approached the park exit on Jack Ranch Road...the gate was chained – closed & locked! "Ha!! I guess we get to enjoy the forest a bit longer." So my Prius had to slowly drive in reverse until there was a spot wide enough to turn around, and then drive all the way back across the forest.

This was not the adventure I had planned, but it allowed us to experience a pristine section of the forest we certainly would have missed otherwise.

We enjoyed the White River area, Deer Creek at California Hot Springs, and some magnificent mountain views along the way. Looking back, I'm truly grateful for the detour and unexpected beauty it brought.

When has a "closed road" led you to an unexpected blessing?
